Kayaking Exercises

If you were training for a kayaking expedition....

Of course, there is nothing better than kayaking, for training towards a kayaking expedition. But, beyond that if you are looking for some exercises that you could do at the gymn, you may find the following information useful. These are guidelines only, please have a trainer with you, when you are getting started.

The three main components would be to develop a) your upper-limb endurance , b) improve your core / back strengthening exercises and c) improving your agility/flexibility

a) Upper-limb endurance

You could use a rowing machine to achieve that. If you have access to a kayak ergometer, even better.

I certainly prefer to do it on a efx, elliptical-cross-trainer. Instead of pedalling it, gently lean back and you can pre-dominantly, use your arms to propel (pull and push) it. If you stood on one leg (do be careful), you can completely eliminate the pedal power. You could alternate between standing-up with the two legs, interposed with periods of pedal power, to give a good sustained interval training. Do not forget to add in your truncal-rotation, as you are paddling (pulling/pushing on the arms of the efx machine)

b) Core / back strengthening exercises

The above exercise that I find very useful, maybe performed sitting on a swiss-ball, with a stick, and feet planted against the corner of a wall or a stable platform. It simulates recovery from a 'brace' manouver. Helps in strengthening the core, and in initiating that hip-drive. Please start doing them, with assistance from a trainer

It is important to have a strong back and core, especially for those multi-day expeditions. Standard spinal extension exercises and 'planks' should be an important part of your training.

c) Agility/flexibility

It is also important to have a good agility program as part of training. As you would be seated with your legs straight with extended lengths of time, tight Hamstrings may not help your cause. Hamstring stretches are a must. Standard stretching exercises for the body will help. If you are into YOGA, learning to do a Vakrasana will help the cause of improving your trunkal rotation. Again. it is important to learn it from an instructor.
